2017 Don James Golf Classic

James-family-edit-01.jpg

Friday, September 8, 2017 was a day to remember. A cool, crisp morning led to a fun-filled afternoon on the course. It's hard to tell what the course favorite was; the long-drive pros? golf ball launcher? the hole-in-one challenges? All said, it was a great time! After the final tally, our winners were:
  • Coal Creek: Gary Hartnett's team
  • China Creek: Brad Evered's team
At dinner, former Husky and current Club Director of Rainier Vista Boys & Girls Club, LonZell Hill, gave the speech of all speeches at dinner, reminding everyone that we have the opportunity to change a kids' life every single day and it is our duty to do just that.

Please join us in thanking our sponsors, supporters, and volunteers who made this event possible. And to our Club staff, thank you for everything you do to positively impact the lives of our kids every single day.

Couldn't make the event? Sorry, we missed you and hope to see you next year! If you'd like to contribute, it's not too late. Donate today!

A big THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the 22nd Annual Don James Golf Classic, presented by
Caliber Home Loans at the Golf Club at Newcastle! Together, we raised over $180,000 for the kids of the Kirkland Boys & Girls Club!

Our full two courses of 288 golfers started with lunch from Ezell's Famous Chicken and then enjoyed a beautiful day golfing and participating in fun activities hosted by our fabulous sponsors. The sunny day of golf was followed by a cocktail hour and Silent Auction, sponsored by Complete Office, and the Live Auction Dinner Banquet, with special guest speaker Damon Huard. We were honored to carry out Coach James' wishes to continue to raise big bucks for the kids who need us the most – and we did just that.  Find more details in our Fall Executive Brief.

We have S.M.A.R.T. Girls!

Forty girls ranging from 6 to 14 years of age participated in the May 13th Career Fair for S.M.A.R.T. Girls (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) at the Kirkland Boys & Girls Club.  Twelve women representing nine different professions such as: an attorney, FBI agent, a computer scientist, a publisher and a rugby coach joined the event to meet and inspire the girls.

Club girls were given the opportunity to rotate around the room to ask each woman questions about what their favorite part of their job was and the challenges they have had to overcome.  The girls were given passport booklets to write the answers into.

S.M.A.R.T. Girls offers young women age's 8 to17 guidance toward healthy attitudes and lifestyles; eating right, staying fit and getting good health care. Encouraging young women to have healthy attitudes and lifestyles, S.M.A.R.T. Girls helps them reach their full potential. Through dynamic sessions, group activities, field trips and mentoring opportunities with adult women, Club girls enjoy the opportunity to build skills and develop positive relationships.

September 5, 2014—21st Annual Don James Golf Classic

THANK YOU for a wonderful event on Friday!  With the help from our Presenting Sponsor, Cobalt Mortgage, and our Silent Auction Sponsor, Complete Office, we were able to beat all previous years and raise over $250,000 for kids!  This is another record year for the DJGC and we have YOU to thank!

The day was complete with a Sunrise Golf Experience with pro-golfer Lee Elder, lunch from Ezell's Famous Chicken, the UW Pep Band to get us all pumped, special guest and host Warren Moon, a putting contest put on by Flat Stick Pub, and 18-holes of fun provided by our tournament sponsors.  All this followed by a cocktail hour and Silent Auction while B&GC member Ethan Thompson set the mood, and finally the Live Auction Dinner Banquet to conclude the event, hearing from Warren Moon and the very special Carol James.  We were honored to carry out Coach James' wishes to continue to raise big bucks for the kids who need us the most – and we did just that.

A few things to note:

In Memory of the Dawgfather

Ever since his retirement in 1993, former Husky football coach Don James has served as the honorary chair of the Kirkland Boys & Girls Club Don James Golf Classic (DJGC). Sadly, Coach James passed of pancreatic cancer shortly after last year's tournament.  He was 80 years old.

Under his chairmanship, the DJGC raised nearly $2 million dollars since its inception in 1993 and is now regarded as one of the biggest and best-run nonprofit golf tournaments in the state of Washington. Coach James loved the DJGC tournament, spending countless hours preparing for it each year, and in 19 years never missing his tee time.

In 19 seasons at Washington, Coach James won 153 games, six Pac Ten Conference championships and a share of the National Championship in 1992. He was the winningest coach in Husky football history with a .726 winning percentage. He earned National Coach of the Year honors in 1977, 1984 and 1991 and was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.

"Coach James was a winner on and off the field, and we are honored to have had him involved in our cause for 20 amazing years.  His memory and his mission to help kids in need will live on."  --Doug Wozeniak, Regional Director, Boys & Girls Clubs of King County
