The first BGCKC countywide chess tournament occurred in January 2016. BGCKC's chess program Kings & Queens was through a partnership with Chess4Life, which teaches life skills through chess.

The North Seattle Boys & Girls Club hosted the tournament with 48 Club members from our Federal Way Child Care, Mercer Island Child Care, and the Kirkland, Smilow Rainier Vista, Southwest, and Ballard Clubs. Staff, parents, and volunteers enjoyed watching kids compete in two age groups: K-3 and 4-12.

"It's inspiring to see the sportsmanship that chess develops in our members and to see them having fun using their critical thinking skills," said Evan McKittrick, Vice President of Quality, Impact, and Partnerships for Boys & Girls Clubs of King County. "BGCKC and Chess4Life are committed to providing an engaging and supportive learning environment. The next countywide tournament is tentatively scheduled for November 2016."
