Renton/Skyway Club kids complete their first Hour of Code workshop

‚ÄčWP_20160329_17_18_48_Pro [409675].jpgThe Renton/Skyway Club successfully completed the first STEM Coding workshop with elementary students on March 29, 2016. They enjoyed learning how to code, completed their Star Wars task, and presented their findings to the rest of the class.

The competition had two parts: java coding and verbal presentations in front of the class.

Each team had a computer and chose a team name. The instructor explained the competition to the students and how to conduct their presentations. Once the competition began, students were given bonus points for good teamwork and helping others. Team completion times were recorded; students were congratulated and then given prep time for their presentations.

Club kids learned that building computer software takes teamwork and they can boost their self-confidence with obtaining technical skills.

Coding workshops will continue, and while elementary school Club kids are learning a coding program called Scratch, Club teens have moved on to learn JavaScript.
