We are always introducing different ways of learning at Boys & Girls Clubs of King County. Our literacy programs support every stage of education, offering fun rewards and activities while boosting reading confidence. Here are some of the programs we have this fall!
Power Hour is our organization-wide program in which kids earn points for participating in read-alongs, doing homework and independent reading, writing stories, completing math worksheets or coding challenges, and doing independent projects. Points are redeemed for prizes and can add up to getting a Power Hour party at the end of each month. So far this year, Club kids are more focused and on task with their assignments and goals!
North Seattle Club’s Learning Buddies was created in partnership with the Seattle Public Library. Librarians mentor and train high school students to come read and facilitate games with our Club kids for an hour every week. This 9-week program focuses on comprehensive reading, math, and problem-solving games. Over the course of the program, we have seen our Club kids become stronger readers and form positive bonds with their high school mentors!
At B.F. Day Elementary and Wallingford Clubs, Reading Explorers allows kids to pick a theme and share reading experiences with others in a fun and positive environment. This year, the theme is Harry Potter and youth have been sorted into “houses.” Each house gets points for reading books and the winning house will get to choose the type of party for the end of year book reading celebration. This program has won merit awards through Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
Salmon Bay K-8 Club’s Reading Challenge is a reading incentive program encouraging kids to participate in after school reading. They submit written or verbal book reports to staff and keep track of their progress with personalized bookmarks. Every month, staff tally the total number of pages read and give out group prizes. This is a program focused on collaboration and all kids are encouraged to work together. Fun prizes include free time, a slime party, or choosing a hair dye color for the staff!
