At Boys & Girls Clubs of King County, we understand the importance of continuous learning, especially during the summer months. Our Summer BrainGain program is designed to prevent

summer learning loss and provide enriching experiences for youth. This year, we are thrilled to have the support of Panda Express’ Panda Cares program, whose generous grant significantly impacts our efforts.

Summer learning loss is a critical issue affecting students’ academic progress. On average, students lose about a month’s learning over the summer (Source: The Effects of Summer Vacation on Achievement Test Scores: A Narrative and Meta-Analytic Review). Our Summer programs aim to address this by offering a variety of activities that keep minds sharp.

Our Clubs offer diverse activities that make learning fun and engaging. Programs include field trips where youth can explore history, science, and the arts in an interactive setting. These trips provide educational value and expose youth to new experiences and cultures. One parent shared, “The field trips were awesome! I even learned about new places and experiences. My kid loved all of the art and water activities, too.”

Another key component of Summer BrainGain is 20 minutes of reading each day for all members. Encouraging youth to read during the summer helps maintain literacy skills and fosters a lifelong love of reading. We provide access to various books and organize reading challenges to keep youth motivated.

“I appreciate the reading, math, and writing exercises to get them in the back-to-school mindset,” said a club parent.

In addition to field trips and reading, our program includes hands-on STEAM activities that inspire curiosity and innovation. Youth can participate in science experiments, technology projects, and math games that make learning exciting and dynamic. These activities help build critical thinking skills and encourage a love for science and technology.

Keeping youth engaged during the summer is crucial for academic and emotional development. Here are some tips for parents and caregivers to continue the learning journey at home:

As we dive into the summer, we’re filled with excitement and anticipation for all the incredible experiences and learning opportunities. Let’s make the most of these sunny days, explore new adventures, and keep the spirit of learning alive and thriving. Here’s to a fantastic summer filled with growth, discovery, and fun!
