How Japna’s Story Reflects the Power of Boys & Girls Clubs

What does it take for a young person to grow into a confident leader, a mentor, and an advocate for others?

For Japna R., it started with a simple but powerful experience: walking into a Boys & Girls Club and finding a place where she truly belonged.

Recently, Japna—our 2026 Youth of the Year—joined Lori Bae, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of King County, on New Day Northwest to share her journey. Her story is not just a reflection of her own determination—it’s a testament to what becomes possible when young people are supported, encouraged, and given the opportunity to lead.

Japna’s Story

Japna first walked through Club doors as a third grader. Like so many youth, she was looking for more than just a place to go after school. She was looking for connection, safety, and community.

She found all three.

Over the years, Japna continued to return—not just because the Club felt like home, but because it became a space where she could grow. What began as participation evolved into leadership. Today, she serves as a Counselor-in-Training (CIT), mentoring younger members, leading activities, and helping create an environment where every child feels seen, heard, and valued.

Her journey—from camper to leader—illustrates the long-term impact of consistent, caring support systems in a young person’s life.

Building Skills That Last a Lifetime

Through the Club’s Counselor-in-Training program, Japna has gained more than leadership experience. She has developed confidence, responsibility, and real-world skills that will carry into her future.

These experiences have helped shape her aspirations. Japna plans to pursue studies in psychology and political science, with a focus on social and emotional learning. Her goal is clear: to advocate for young people and help build systems that support them both academically and emotionally.

Her story highlights something we see every day across our Clubs: when young people are given opportunities to lead, they rise—and they bring others with them.

Each year, Boys & Girls Clubs of King County celebrates teens like Japna through our Youth of the Year program, recognizing young leaders who are making a meaningful difference in their communities.
