Tony and Zilliang’s First Office Experience Providing Data Support For Local Non-Profit

YouthForce is thrilled to be working with Global Visionaries this year as an internship site for our Doorways and WIOA Internship Programming. Global Visionaries is a Seattle non-profit that “facilitates a multi-year youth leadership program with an emphasis on social and environmental justice. [Their] participants are a deliberately diverse group of high school students from the Greater Seattle area.” This group of students participates in a year-long program that includes learning and connecting in workshops, retreats, and community services events. At the end of the program they take a two-week immersion trip to Guatemala where they live in a home-stay and work alongside Guatemalan teens in service projects.

Tony has been working with Global Visionaries (GV) since August helping to enter data for the organization’s volunteer recruitment. “I’ve been working with Salesforce, a platform we use to communicate with volunteers.” This is his first ‘real’ office experience, which he says is a good thing as he plans to study Business and Marketing at the University of Washington or Western Washington University next fall.

“You learn a lot at the [YouthForce] events and workshops. And the work experience opens your mind to new things.”

Tony is no stranger to YouthForce programing, “I’ve interned with the Ethiopian Community Center, Seattle Seahawks and Sounders FC. My internship as a TeamWork Intern with the Sounders made me think more about working in the sports industry, something I never thought of before. You learn a lot at the [YouthForce] events and workshops. And the work experience opens your mind to a lot of new things.”

Whereas Tony has been with GV for two months, Zilliang just started two weeks ago: “I’ve been focusing on entering data for all of GV’s events — they have events almost every month,” Zilliang explains, “Lots of them are field trips. Others include Culture Night, Pro-Justice events, Youth in Action etc.” In fact, on the day of this interview, they were preparing for a fundraising breakfast the very next morning.

This is Zilliang’s first office experience, as well as his first internship with YouthForce. “Working in an office is sometimes boring, sometimes fun,” Zilliang expresses, summing up office life quite accurately. He is currently a junior at Franklin High School and hopes to study Accounting or Computer Science at UW, so getting used to the rhythm of an office environment is valuable indeed.

We are excited to see how Tony and Zilliang’s experiences at Global Visionaries develop over time and the ways it informs their career choices moving forward!
